San Cristóbal de Las Casas
Located in a beautiful area of the plateau known as San Cristobal and that is part of the mountains to the north of Chiapas, we find San Cristobal de las Casas. By year 1524 the captain Luis Marin tried to conquer the region, but when he found a strong resistance from the natives he decided to retreat without leaving an establishment for Spanish colonizers. Later, with the mission of pacifying the area in a definite way, the viceroy authorities sent captain Diego de Mazariegos, who attacked the natives in the famous battle of Tepechtia, in which the natives of Chiapas preferred to jump into the Cañon del Sumidero, rather than submit to the Spaniards. Later, during a trip that Mazariegos was doing through the region of the Llanos and Chiapa, he passed by the valley of Hueyzacatlan, term that in the nahuatl language means land of large grass. As general captain of the province and lieutenant of the governor for the king, he founds there on the 31 of march of 1528, the town of Ciudad Real, calling it like his natal city in Spain.
